Creating Safe Space

What is a safe space?

A safe space is an environment where you don’t have to fear, hold back or defend yourself from bias, conflict or threats. A safe space allows you to be undeniably you.

Now, why is a safe space so important?

A safe space is important due to the simple fact that we need it to grow, to heal our wounds and to rest. When we are feeling attacked or threatened, our innate tendency is to close up, run away or protect ourselves. In a safe environment, there is no such need for this. It provides us with the opportunity to release repressed energy in a non-threatening manner and allows us to learn about ourselves. Learning about one’s self is truly liberating. Repairing and building a relationship with one’s self, eventually translates to our outside relationships with our families and friends.

How do I create my own safe space?

Creating a safe space looks differently for everyone. Some people prefer a physical safe place, while others prefer a mental safe space and others prefer both. Regardless of your preference, your safe space may not look or sound like another’s.

Examples of a mental safe space:

  • Using your imagination to create a calming place or replaying a happy memory

  • Repeating mantras, quotes and sayings

  • Counting, singing, free-styling, etc.

  • Breathing patterns and practices

  • Meditation

Examples of a physical safe space:

  • A park bench near the forest

  • The beach

  • A quiet room, closet, small space or hiding area

  • A friend or family member’s house

  • A bed or bedroom

Your safe space should be a place where you feel the most free and sometimes, it can take a bit of time to find the right safe space. Don’t be disheartened.

Ask yourself these questions when you are searching for your safe space:

  1. Do I feel safe? Free from threats, conflict and bias?

  2. Can I be honest here in this space or do I have to withhold truth?

  3. Am I able to take deep breaths here?

  4. Am I being kind to myself here?

Thank you for reading this today. I hope this reaches you with love and light.
